What's at Stake

By Jon Huey, on November 5, 2009

What do Americans lose if Nancy Pelosi succeeds in taking over health care? We’ll lose the freedom to shop around for the policy that best meets our own needs. Under her bill, we’re forced to purchase our insurance through a government run exchange.  We’re forced to purchase only those policies that meet all the requirements set by the new health czar or be fined for failing to do so.  And we’re forced to pay for all the cost overruns through higher premiums or higher future taxes.  Where does all this lead?  In 1993, the government started a public option for student loans, but only a fraction of the public opted in. So last month, the House voted to give the government monopoly control over all student loans. That’s about to happen to your health care unless 40 “Blue Dog” Democrats decide to stop them.  You need to call them today.

Mr. McClintock

Why don't you do something about the screwed up Health Care system in America, instead of being the epitome of the "no" Party.

I will not vote for you when I see your second rate issue stance when so many in the country (yes millions) can't have health care.

Of course you have it, so I guess it's not a big problem is it.

Next time read your bible and figure out what a true Christian should stand for (helping all).

Socialist Healthcare.  Please take a stand against socialist healthcare and remove yourself from your taxpayer paid plan.  Why are you on a second rate system when you can be on a first rate system that I'm on as a small business owner.  That way, the free market can tell you what your rate will be and if you become no longer profitable, the insurance company will deny you coverage after paying your premiums.  Again, why stay on your socialist healthcare?

What part of this are you not getting Tom?  Besides all the corrupt ads to buy drugs on your healthcare blog, everyone seems to be telling you to get off your butt and do something to ensure our countrymen can afford healthcare.  Jon Huey tells us to call the "Blue Dogs" in order to stop healthcare reform - um, is there a separate line telling you to oppose healthcare for Americans that I'm not aware of?

As a lifelong supporter of democratic reform, I am dumbstruck by Democrats' support for any health care proposal that essentially placates the avaricious demands of our private health insurance industry.  Either no one gets it, or our government is thoroughly corrupted by constant lobbying from K Street.  Is anyone, Democrat or Republican, seriously considering a mandate for the compulsory consumption of health care insurance, on threat of financial penalty, during the greatest recession since the Great Depression?  A Massachusetts-style ripoff, certain to fatten the profits of investors and financiers, with a track record of escalating costs and impoverishing people, and all with the blessing of a Congress that is ostensibly progressive!  Why aren't we talking about emulating the already successful model of health care in Scandinavian countries?  Answer: because we have a government that is firmly in the grip of industry magnates.

Just to let you know: Congress-members are not fooling anyone.  Rather than design a system within a STEEPLY PROGRESSIVE income tax system, limiting profit or factoring it out entirely, a "hybrid" is being developed that promises to open the Treasury doors to private industry.  I do not believe that you or any of our Congress-members are so naive as to fail to see that.  This is as close to government collusion with industry (ie., corruption) as it gets, and I find myself actually rooting for Republicans as the bill goes to the floor.  Get private profit out of the health care insurance industry.  Do we have to scream it?  You are going to have to oppose those powerful financial interests that are running this country into the ground.  There is no compromise alternative.  There is no other way.  Ronald Reagan was wrong about government being the problem, except that our Congress-members refuse to take any responsibility and stand up to the wealthy, corporate elite.  He's dead.  Let's bury him and his failed economic neo-liberal ideology.

Sincerely,  R.  Harrison

Hi everyone,

I used to live in Europe and Japan.  Although I am a US citizen, I never really used the health care non-system here until I moved back as an adult four years ago.  I was really shocked.

In both other countries where I lived as a resident, I never paid a copay, never had anything denied, never was told I couldn't see a doctor because he wasn't on my plan, never met a deductible, never was denied coverage.  Within 2 months of moving back to my home country, I was told all of those things.  Amazing!  In Japan (where I lived for five years and had the most surgeries etc...) I paid about $50 a month - that's $600 a year and got absolutely everything covered and it would have been like that for the rest of my life.  That is, if I hadn't moved back to the United States.....

If over 40 other countries can provide all medical treatment to all residents, why can't we?  Well the answer has been obvious to me as soon as I moved back here - profit motive in the insurance industry.  It didn't exist in either country where I lived before, but it does exist here.

And if you are going to say that I paid more in taxes you are absolutely wrong - I pay more taxes here than I did in any other country and I still have to buy private insurance, insurance that takes a big bite out of my take home every week.

But, I don't expect anything less out of this Congress.  They are  bought and paid for, they have made that clear.

I'm a proud member of http://www.healthcareforall.org in California.  They fight for what is right

Thank you for posting your positive personal experience with health care systems in other countries.

Profiteering insurance companies are influencing politicians and voters with scare tactics. I attended a health reform town hall meeting hosted by McClintock and will quote him:  "America is a great country and what keeps prices down is free market enterprise".  Could have fooled me with the insurance industry. The sad part was that many in the crowd nodded in agreement.

People, please think for yourself. Don't listen to one-sided news and scare stories before making your decision.  Don't forget that talk radio is not news but entertainment disguised as news. It's purpose is not to inform but to provoke, not encourage you to think as they attempt to give you all the answers. Why would anyone be proud to state they are a "dittohead" not a free thinker?

Dear " embarrassed to have you as my congressman",

It appears you've made the common mistake of assuming that the insurance market in the U.S. is a free market. It's not.

State governments already regulate what insurance we can purchase. I can't buy a policy from a company in Utah because it doesn't cover everything that our legislators think it should cover. Does that sound like a free market to you?

In a free market, prices are signals that let willing parties engage in trade. If I don't feel it's worth the price, I don't make a deal with someone. Our current healthcare system does a great job of hiding prices from people. Your doctor's visit doesn't cost $5.00, that's just your copay. What's the real cost?

We do need to reform our health care system, but it's a smear against freedom to assume that freedom is what cause all its problems.

I am very disappointed the problem with this system is greed and someone needs to do something about it.  I pay 17% of my net income for mediocre health insurance.  I am considering dropping it and paying my own medical expense because they would only represent 6% of my income.  What scares the hell out of me is not getting cancer or having a heart attack.. it's what will happen to my net income as health insurance premuims continue to go up!  We  have to get rid of lobbists.  It's the only way things are going to get less corrupt.  We have so many problems in this country and no one is doing anything about it.  Frankly Canada is looking really good!

The health care system we have does not work for most Americans.  It is clear that reform needs to happen.   We need to have health care availiable to all!  Why can  Congress not do the work we are paying them for; to solve the problems we have as a nation instead of fighting among themselves and fingerpointing all of the time.   It truly is time to put all the political b.s. aside and address issues that are affecting all Americans.   We need to start investing in the infrastructure of our country instead of pouring money we don't have into fighting wars in other countries.   Health care reform seems like a good place to start.  All of us are already paying a huge price for the health care we do get  (and most of us still have huge deductibles and copays if something major happens!  Is that really acceptable coverage?).   Why not make sure the coverage is as good as it can be for every person in this country at a price everyone including the government can afford?  When employers shop around for plans do they not negotiate with the insurance companies to get the best deal (most coverage for best price)?  Why can the government not shop around for the same thing, or at least make it legal to shop around for the best price for a plan for all Americans?

The health care system in USA is corrupt.  I do not trust politicians who receive campaign contributions from the insurance industry.  They are not serving the public, but corporate greed.

Congress has great "government run" health care.  You don't hear them complaining about it.  After one term, they get health care for life.  We're paying for it.  Why are they better than us?  Our forefathers wanted to prevent a government run by elitists.

Where were all the concerns about debt when we were throwing money away in Iraq?  Why not hold Haliburton accountable for every cent their "archaic" accounting practices couldn't account for?  Try using that line the next time the IRS comes calling.

I am a teacher.  My husband was a respiratory therapist.  I work part time, and he is unemployed.  No insurance here.  I had to call 8 specialists before I could find one who would take me without insurance.  I had to drive an hour.  I can't go to the dentist, or get my daughter preventative medicine.  We can't afford to get sick.

Clearly, our representatives don't have the same problem with health care.  How about we abolish their health care to save money?  We've been gutting all our programs to pay for the foreign wars that REPUBLICANS got us into.  I'm all for investing in OUR country, rather than destroying and rebuilding other countries.

Stop fear mongering, and represent the PEOPLE, not the corporations.
